Public hearing set for December 4th at Fayetteville Tech; outcome could impact county water rates and availability for decades

FAYETTEVILLE — The Town of Fuquay-Varina has filed a request with state regulators that could significantly impact the long-term water security of Cumberland County residents. The town is seeking an interbasin transfer to withdraw over 6 million gallons of water per day from the Cape Fear River Basin.

To grasp the scale of this request, Fayetteville PWC provides approximately 8 million gallons of water daily to serve the entire Fort Bragg installation. The potential diversion of a comparable volume has raised serious concerns about the future strain on the shared water resource that serves our region.

The Cape Fear River is a critical source for public water systems across the region. A transfer of this magnitude could affect future water availability, negatively impact the river’s ecosystem, and potentially lead to increased water costs for Cumberland County residents to fund new infrastructure to secure alternative supplies.

A crucial public hearing on this matter, hosted by the NC Environmental Management Commission, is scheduled for:

  • Date: Thursday, December 4, 2025
  • Time: 6:00 p.m. (Sign-in begins at 5:30 p.m.)
  • Location: Cumberland Hall Auditorium, Fayetteville Technical Community College

This hearing is the primary opportunity for local residents, business owners, and officials to voice their concerns directly to state decision-makers.

The future of our community’s water is at stake. Cumberland County residents are strongly urged to attend this critical public hearing on December 4th at FTCC and make their voices heard. Your presence is vital to protect our region’s most essential resource.
