Fayetteville, Fort Bragg Water Supply at Risk – Public Hearing December 4 Demands Your Immediate Attention

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County faces an imminent threat to its water security as Fuquay-Varina pushes to permanently divert 6.17 million gallons daily from the Cape Fear River – a move that would trigger immediate drought restrictions, threaten Fort Bragg’s water supply, and cripple economic development throughout our region.

This interbasin transfer represents nothing less than a water grab that would devastate our community. The proposed diversion would force Fayetteville Public Works Commission to implement Drought Level One conservation measures IMMEDIATELY upon approval – regardless of actual drought conditions – affecting every resident, business, and farm in Cumberland County.

CRITICAL IMPACTS NOW:

  • Fort Bragg at Risk: PWC supplies 8 million gallons daily to America’s largest military installation. This transfer directly threatens national security by compromising the post’s water reliability.
  • Economic Disaster: New businesses will avoid our region when they learn we cannot guarantee water access. Existing industries face uncertain futures.
  • Health Emergency: Reduced river flow means concentrated pollutants from upstream communities. Your water bills will skyrocket to cover millions in new treatment costs.
  • Legal Violation: Fuquay-Varina’s application violates NC law by failing to prove no harm to downstream users and ignoring donor basin priority statutes.

THIS IS NOT A DRILL: The North Carolina Environmental Management Commission will decide SOON. Only massive public opposition can stop this.
