Second Driver Also Charged Following October Wreck on Rosehill Road That Killed Three Teenagers
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The driver of the vehicle involved in the October crash that killed three E.E. Smith High School students has been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, the Fayetteville Police Department announced Tuesday.
Dymond Nekiya Monroe, 21, of Fayetteville, was taken into custody on November 19 after being released from a UNC medical facility where she was treated for critical injuries sustained in the October 8 single-vehicle crash on the 2700 block of Rosehill Road. The FPD’s Traffic Unit alleges excessive speed and a street race were contributing factors in the incident that claimed the lives of 18-year-old Jai’Hyon Lamont Elliot and two 17-year-old male juveniles.
Monroe faces three counts of involuntary manslaughter, along with charges of willful speed competition, speeding, careless and reckless driving, and an insurance violation. She is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $300,000 secured bond. Her first court appearance is scheduled for November 20.
In a related development, a second Fayetteville woman, 19-year-old Destini Rhinada Genwright, turned herself in to authorities on October 21. Police identified her as the driver of a second vehicle, a 2023 Dodge Charger, allegedly involved in a speed competition with Monroe’s car at the time of the crash. Genwright was charged with willful speed competition, speeding, careless and reckless driving, and an insurance violation. She was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.
The tragedy has deeply affected the E.E. Smith High School community and the wider Cumberland County area, highlighting ongoing concerns about street racing on local roads. The investigation remains active as the FPD’s Traffic Unit continues to analyze evidence.
