County facilities and partner locations provide refuge from the cold; residents urged to check on vulnerable neighbors

FAYETTEVILLE — With freezing temperatures forecast for the week, Cumberland County has activated its network of warming centers to provide safe, warm spaces for residents needing relief from the cold.

The County, in partnership with the City of Fayetteville, will open multiple facilities during regular operating hours. This initiative is particularly critical for elderly residents, those without reliable heating, and homeless community members facing potentially dangerous conditions.

The following locations are available as warming centers:

  • Cumberland County DSS Auxiliary Lobby (1225 Ramsey St.): Tuesday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Cumberland County Public Health Lobby (1235 Ramsey St.): Tuesday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • All eight Cumberland County Public Library branches during normal operating hours
  • FAST Transit Lobby (505 Franklin St.)
  • Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation Centers
  • The Salvation Army of the Sandhills (220 E. Russell St.): Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. (will serve lunch at noon and dinner at 5 p.m. when operating as a warming center)

Residents are strongly encouraged to check on neighbors, especially older adults living alone and those who may lack adequate heating. Pet owners should also bring animals indoors during freezing weather.

The community’s most vulnerable members rely on these services during extreme weather. Ensuring everyone has access to warmth is a practical demonstration of Cumberland County looking after its own.
